2 years, 24,000 miles, and 6 continents. Storied adventurer Mike Horn, in the greatest adventure of his life...
Mike Horn is a Swiss-South African professional explorer. For 25 years, Horn has inspired and educated the world by pushing the limits of human ability through a series of groundbreaking expeditions. He has circumnavigated the globe entirely under human power, summited 4 eight-thousander peaks without the use of additional help or oxygen, followed the Artic Circle around the globe during the dark Artic winter, and swum the length of the Amazon River. With the support of Mercedes Benz, Mike Horn introduces an expedition worthy of the 21st century
On May 6th, Mike Horn will embark on his next adventure, Pole2Pole. Equipped with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and his sailing vessel Pangaea, he will attempt to become the first person to undergo a unique circumnavigation of the globe via the two poles over land and sea.
Mike Horn will begin his expedition from the Yacht Club of Monaco, from which he will sail his boat southwards to Namibia. From there, Horn will trade sails for wheels, where by means of the G-Class he will explore the world’s oldest desert, the Namib. His route will then take him through the Okavango delta in Botswana, the world’s largest inland delta. On to Horn’s homeland South Africa, where he will research and dive with Great White Sharks, an ultimate predator but also a critical element of the marine ecosystem. Afterwards Horn will sail to the Antarctic, which he will cross on skis via the South Pole. Crossing complete, he will navigate the Pacific through the islands of Oceania to Asia, where he will travel parts of New Zealand and Australia. In Papua New Guinea, the G-Class will await him for an expedition through the primordial equatorial forests. Once arrived in Asia onboard Pangaea, a further overland journey with the legendary off-road vehicle will unfold, leading Horn through the tundra in Kamchatka, before setting sails for the great north. The extreme athlete will then attempt another crossing, this time of the Arctic via the North Pole. Following this, Mike will cross over the world’s largest island, Greenland, after which he will conclude his adventure by navigating back to his point of departure, Monaco.
Over 22,000 hours of design were pumped into making a ship that can navigate through tropics and rivers as easily as it can through polar regions, without resorting to solutions that were overly harmful to the environment.
In order to navigate through polar terrain, the Pangaea is equipped with BlueTec engines, which provide comparatively low emissions. The batteries of the boat are charged by a combination of solar and hydrogen fuel cell power.
The Pangaea has placed a large emphasis on recycling. The kitchen has separate compartments for different types of waste to make recycling simple and efficient, and the boat is equipped with large nets to collect bottles and bags from the water.
The 35-meter two master vessel has 600 square meters of sailcloth and 35 meters of mast. It can hold 30 people, and has a 16-seat conference room.
The Pangaea has a cutting edge media and broadcast centre that can communicate high quality AV content from anywhere in the world.

Mike has joined forces with Bang Bang Agency, a swiss communications agency, to set up the Water drop DNA project, and environmental project on water DNA analysis that will take place throughout the Pole2Pole expedition to raise awareness on the importance of water.
In search of the perfect boot for Mike’s Antarctica crossing, he decided to collaborate with the Swiss ski boot manufactured Dahu, who assisted Mike in designing a 2-in-1 multifunctional boot that will give him the flexibility to trek, and the rigidity to snow kite.
During my Antartica crossing, I look forward to eating well and receiving the appropriate amount of calories with my Trek’N Eat ice dried food that has kindly been supplied to me by Katadyn.
METAXA 12 Stars has a unique taste. Each sip is a pilgrimage to flavour. The authentic character of this spirit is irresistibly associated with the idea of 'journey' for the five senses, a journey with one of the greatest explorers of our times, Mike Horn. Authenticity and courage is what unites METAXA 12 Stars and Mike Horn in this unique journey of exploration!
For Mike’s Antarctica crossing, it was required to design the ideal shoe insulation. Mike therefore asked Mover to develop a warm and breathable shoe insulation to fight the extreme cold. Inspired by traditional Russian woolen boots used to fight the Siberian cold, our starting point was the Mover Wool Concept entirely based on wool and breathable materials.
The must have bags for big climbs! Osprey backpacks offer much more than meets the eye. Mike uses Osprey products on alpine style assents without oxygen or the assistance of high altitude sherpas. The only problem with these bags is that you cannot blame the pack if you don’t reach the summit, you can only blame yourself!
