Lost Frogs Project
April 16, 2011
Gdańsk, Poland
In Poland all species of amphibians are protected. Gdańsk, a city where I live, is located in hilly area. Some districts are really close to forests where live plenty of animals. Spring is a special season especially for amphibians such as frogs or toads. After winter they are going to some bodies of water to make a squawk, unfortunately on their way to water people build roads and their natural behaviour is disturbed.
But still there is a hope!
Volunteers can rescue them from the worst! everyone who only have free time and want to help our little Earth -mates can join the action and make something good for amphibians conservation.
Tomorrow with my friends (of course all YEPers) Zosia, Paweł and Olek, we are going to act and save as much toads and frogs as it'll be possible.
Are there any actions like that in places where you live?
I hope so, because there is dramatic decline in all amphibian population around the world!

On every walk I take with my dog I see dead frogs on streets. I never felt attached to frogs or amphibians, yet this view was somehow sad. Poor animals suffer the consequences of dramatic rise in the amount of cars we use. Drivers rarely care about what they drive through, and the effect is hundreds of dead animals. The mating season for frogs is the early spring and it is a time they gather near ponds and lakes. Why not to help them cross the streets and put them near those lakes? Only thing you have to remember is to have your hands wet before touching a frog. Otherwise you destroy their mucus layer and put them at risk of getting an infection, zoologists warn.
We should not forget about protection of amphibians and bear in mind, that they can extinct soon and we will all suffer when population of mosquitoes and flies both rise!

We helped frogs to cross the street and reach water safely. Many frogs in my neighborhood die under cars on their way to the lake. Social services built a net that prevents frogs from crossing a street, unless some volunteers come and take them. Thus we could help. I live in the area where we did this project and can honestly tell, that back in the past frogs were very loud in the mating season. Now very rarely can you hear them as in the past. I hope that frog's fate is not as sad as it seems to be right now!
