Acting during YEP Malaysia Expedition
From the 25th of October 2009 until the 10th of November 2009, eight Young Explorers had the opportunity to meet with Mike Horn on Pangaea in Tawau on the east coast of Borneo. The youths explored the spectacular coastline of the northern tip of the Island, finishing their trip in Miri on the west coast, 17 days later.
The pristine Nature of the Island supplied the youths with a varied and busy schedule and gave a great insight to the marine life and the threats that the human being has caused on this incredible ecosystem.
The activities included:
- Explore: Diving and exploration of marine life, coral reef observation, visit of caves, pirogues on river, walking through the jungle,
- Learn: coral reef restoration, pollution of the shores, impact of deforestation on orangutans, the benifits of sanctuaries for turtle populations
- Act: beach and ocean clean-up, coral reef restoration, education of local people concerning pollution of the shores, assisting and observations in orangutan and turtle sanctuaries.
