Design and Specifications

Many hours of creativity and thought were needed to conform to Mike Horn’s specific requirements and needs during the Pangaea Expedition and the results were very rewarding. Mike Horn together with a masterful team has created Pangaea, an environment where people from all walks of life can meet and share the same passion and objectives.
Pangaea, was built to carry out research, environmental and educational projects and to venture to all corners of the earth. Due to it's demanding route it was decided to build Pangaea with a retractable keel making it capable of going into difficult territories such as polar regions and up rivers. She needed also to be equipped with the necessary tools to fulfill her mission whilst keeping safety for her crew and passengers a top priority at all times.
The lower or living quarters of Pangaea consist of a galley, media center, seven cabins and five headers and have been designed for maximum comfort with Brasilian ebony wood and Bamboo.
With its onboard media center, Pangaea is able to communicate from anywhere in the world. It is equipped with the latest MAC technology and high quality content can be created, videos edited, emails sent and the website uploaded.
On the higher level, after entering through the cockpit, is a 18-seater conference room with a round table where guests can congregate, discuss projects and watch films.
Both in the cockpit and the engine room, all equipment and machinery is doubled, so if a radar, automatic pilot, engine, desalinator, generator or other fails, there is always a backup that the crew can rely on.
Occupying almost one half of the length of Pangaea is a spacious garage in the stern of the boat. This garage accommodates al header and 3 aft cabins each with three folding bunks. These are used when the boat is at full capaclty and are very comfortable. In addition to this the garage has room for the stockage of material, houses two freezers, one fridge, a waste compressor and a workshop at the entry of the large engine room.
For environmental reasons Pangaea's hull remains unpainted whereas it was decied to cover the deck with Brasilian teak for reasons of safety, warmth and comfort.
