Meet the Pangaea Sailing Vessel Crew

Mike Horn - Skipper

Mike was introduced to sailing rather late in his life. As he became more and more involved in expeditions he realised that sailing would be critical if he wanted to get around the world 'un-motorised'.

Mike quickly learnt to sail with a friend on Lac Léman in Switzerland and a few months later was crossing the Atlantic Ocean solo in the first leg of the Latitude Zero Expedition.

Sailing soon became a very important mode of transport for Mike during all his subsequent expeditions and his sailboats became bigger to adjust to the increased desire to share his expeditions with like-minded people and youngsters from all around the world.

Mike has the priviledge to sail Pangaea with a motivated and passionate crew.

Jacek Proniewicz - First Mate/Engineer

Jacek says he was born in Poland ‘many, many years ago’. On board the Pangaea, he is ‘jack-of-all-trades and in fact, master of them all’ too. His responsibilities include carpentry, engineering and sailing – and in fact anything technical that helps the Pangaea sail as smoothly as possible.

Tristan Jan – Bosun

22 year old Tristan hails from Brittany in France and his passion for sailing was passed down from his father, a professional sailor (who in fact sailed with Mike Horn on Mari Cha when they broke the world record across the Atlantic!). He first heard about the Pangaea Expedition when Mike gave a speech in L’Orient and knew immediately this was for him. Sailing with Mike around the world, Tristan believes he has learnt and experienced more than he could ever imagine.

Tristan is the Bosco of the Pangaea sailboat – so it’s his responsibility to maintain the sails of the vessel. He is excited at the chance to share his knowledge with all the Young Explorers.

Dmitry Sharomov - Crew member and photographer

Russian freelancer photographer based in Russia and New Zealand who has completed a Diploma in Digital Photography in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Dmitry started his photography career with Greenpeace on board of the Rainbow Warrior in 2001. Whilst his primary job was that of a crew member he seized the wonderful photographic opportunities that presented themselves in many places he visited around the world.

Dmitry joined Pangaea during the expedition stop-over in New Zealand and has been engaged as a crew member/photographer ever since.

His family are now based in St Petersburg.

Christian Miller – Dive Master

German-born Christian is 32 years old and has worked around the world as a dive instructor. And for the past 5 years his ‘office’ has been the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Christian met the Mike Horn family in Cairns and quickly shared his passion for the underwater world with them. He counts himself lucky that now he has the chance to show the Young Explorers the true beauty of our ‘blue’ planet – believing that ‘what you see and feel, you are more likely to conserve and protect’.

He has dedicated most of his life to care for the oceans and teach people to explore, enjoy and respect them. Being part of Mike’s crew gives him the chance of a lifetime to visit unseen places, learn even more about the oceans and act now, together with the Young Explorers to really make a difference. His motto is ‘remember, fish are friends – not food!’
